Myrciaria cauliflora

Brazilian Grape Tree, Jaboticaba

Commonly known as the Brazilian Grape Tree, this is a small tree grown for its fruit and great form. Small, white flowers on the branches and trunk result in purple-black berries which resemble grapes. The fruit are sweet and juicy, and can be eaten fresh or used for drinks and desserts. The green foliage is held densely off rigid branches. It grows with a rounded shape, as a multi-stemmed tree to eventually reach 8 m tall and 4 m wide. Best results are achieved when it is positioned in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered, frost-free-site. This subtropical plant is commonly grown as an unusual specimen, maintained in a container, or grown specifically for its fruit. NB: it can take several years before it starts to bear fruit.
