Fig 'Candy'

How to grow Fig 'Candy' in NZ

Fig 'Candy' grows best in full sun with well drained soil. Choose a warm, sheltered position to maximise fruit production, especially in cooler parts of New Zealand. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering once the tree is settled. Avoid poorly drained soils as figs prefer drier conditions. Adding compost or organic matter at planting will support strong root development and long term growth.

Fig 'Candy' care tips

Fig 'Candy' is easy to care for and requires minimal maintenance. Prune during winter to shape the tree and manage size, removing any dead or overcrowded branches. Water during extended dry periods, particularly when fruit is developing. Feeding in spring with a general fertiliser will support healthy growth and fruiting. Protect young trees from frost to ensure successful establishment.

Fig 'Candy' size, spacing, and growth rate

Fig 'Candy' is a moderately vigorous tree that typically grows to around 3 to 5 metres in height and width. It develops a spreading canopy and benefits from pruning to maintain structure. Space trees approximately 3 to 4 metres apart to allow for airflow and full development. Its steady growth rate makes it suitable for both smaller gardens and larger properties.

Landscaping uses for Fig 'Candy'

Fig 'Candy' is ideal for edible gardens where both productivity and visual appeal are important. It can be used as a feature tree, incorporated into mixed planting, or grown in courtyard settings. Its broad foliage provides a lush look, while the fruit adds seasonal interest. Fig 'Candy' is well suited to lifestyle gardens focused on home grown produce.
