Feijoa sellowiana

Feijoa sellowiana, commonly known as Brazilian Guava or Pineapple Guava, is one of the original Feijoa varieties from which many of the new varieties have been bred. This late season producer bears fruit in autumn which are of medium size and very tasty. This evergreen shrub typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide but is often trimmed to smaller sizes. Feijoa sellowiana is commonly grown for fruit production, trimmed into a hedge, used for screening, or added to a mixed planting. We recommend planting at least two varieties to provide for a longer period of fruiting and to ensure better pollination.

Feijoa sellowiana Details

Feijoa sellowiana, commonly known as Brazilian Guava or Pineapple Guava, is one of the original Feijoa varieties from which many of the new varieties have been bred. This late season producer bears fruit in autumn which are of medium size and very tasty. For this variety to fruit well, another variety of Feijoa needs to be planted nearby for fruit to be produced such as Apollo. The fruit result from bright red flowers in summer which are set amidst the dark green leaves. This evergreen shrub typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide but is often trimmed to smaller sizes. It performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, fertile site. Sites prone to heavy frost should be avoided, particularly during establishment. It is tolerant of coastal environments, dry periods, and some wind. Feijoa sellowiana is commonly grown for fruit production, trimmed into a hedge, used for screening, or added to a mixed planting.
