Feijoa Apollo

5 from 1 customers

Feijoa Apollo trees produce tasty, medium-sized fruit in late autumn. This evergreen shrub typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide but can be trimmed to smaller sizes. Feijoa Apollo is commonly grown for fruit production, trimmed into a hedge, used for screening, or added to a mixed planting. The Plant Company recommends planting at least two varieties of Feijoa to provide longer fruiting and this will also help with cross-pollination.

Growing Feijoa Apollo Successfully in NZ

Feijoa Apollo grows well in most New Zealand regions. It thrives in well-drained soil with good sunlight and benefits from occasional trimming. To be safe, the Plant Company recommends protecting the plants from heavy frosts in the first year of growth. We also recommend staking the plants for additional support. Whether grown in containers, mixed plantings, or as a hedge, this plant delivers reliable performance year after year, making it a valuable addition to the home garden.

Feijoa Apollo Care Tips

Feijoa Apollo thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Choose a warm, sheltered site to protect against harsh winds and heavy frost. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while young, and mulch annually to retain soil moisture and keep weeds at bay. Apply fruit tree fertiliser in spring to keep the trees growing actively. Prune after fruiting to shape the plant and allow light into the centre of the tree.

Plant Size and Spacing

Feijoa Apollo grows about 3 m tall and 2–2.5 m wide, forming a vigorous, upright, and bushy tree. It is ideal for planting as a standalone specimen or as a fruiting hedge. For hedging, space plants 1-1.5 m apart. When growing as individual trees, allow at least 3 m between each to ensure healthy growth, good airflow, and easy access for harvesting.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Feijoa 'Apollo'? We are here to help.

I'm looking at planting a couple feijoa trees in my back yard. do you recommend getting 2 different varieties or could i get both the same. I'm not overly fussy about prolonging the time i get fruit. also if i get the 45l tree, typically how long after i plant it till i get my first crop, assuming i look after it.

Having two varieties will extend the fruiting season overall is the only advantage. A 45L tree will have fruit next year.
