The Empire apple tree bears fruit that ripen in late summer. The mid-size fruit are deep red with a light green background and have flesh that is crisp and sweet. They are great for eating fresh. This deciduous tree typically grows to 3.5 m tall and 2.7 m wide though the ultimate size will depend on the rootstock it is grown on. It is self-pollinating and so does not require another apple variety planted close by to set fruit. Best results are achieved with this tree when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. The Empire apple tree is commonly planted for fruit production, grown as a specimen, or added to a mixed planting.
