Commonly known as the Mulberry Tree, this a deciduous tree often grown for its fruit. It produces small white flowers in spring which result in the large, black, juicy berries in summer. The foliage is mid-green and develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a spreading habit and tends to becomes crooked and gnarled with time which can provide additional interest. It will grow to about 8 m tall and spread 10 m but can be contained with trimming as necessary. Best performance with this tree is achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates though a late frost in spring will cause yield loss and can injure plants. This Mulberry is commonly grown as specimen with the added advantages of fruit and summer shade. It is also commonly included in a mixed planting or simply grown for fruit production.
