How to grow Mandarin ‘Satsuma’ in NZ

Plant in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a warm, sheltered location, protected from strong winds and frost. Water regularly during the fruiting period, and mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. In cooler climates, consider planting in a large container that can be moved to a warmer location in winter.

Mandarin ‘Satsuma’ care tips

Fertilise with a citrus-specific blend in early spring and late summer to encourage strong growth and abundant fruiting. Lightly prune after harvest to maintain shape and improve air circulation. Monitor for pests such as scale and aphids and treat as needed. Protect young trees from frost until established.

Mandarin ‘Satsuma’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Grows to around 2–3 m tall and wide with a moderate growth rate. Space trees approximately 3 m apart in the garden, or plant in large pots for patios and courtyards.
