Feijoa 'Opal Star'

Growing Feijoa 'Opal Star' Successfully in NZ

Feijoa 'Opal Star' grows well in most New Zealand regions. It thrives in well-drained soil with good sunlight and benefits from occasional trimming. To be on the safe side, the plant company recommends protecting it from heavy frosts in the first year of growth. We also recommend staking the plants for additional support. Whether grown in containers, mixed plantings, or as a hedge, this plant delivers reliable performance year after year, making it a valuable addition to the home garden.

Feijoa 'Opal Star' Care Tips

Feijoa 'Opal Star' thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Choose a warm, sheltered site to protect against harsh winds and heavy frost. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while young, and mulch annually to retain soil moisture and keep weeds at bay. Apply fruit tree fertiliser in spring to keep the trees growing actively. Prune after fruiting to shape the plant and allow light into the centre of the tree.

Plant Size and Spacing for Feijoa 'Opal Star'

Feijoa 'Opal Star' is a compact, bushy variety that typically grows to about 3 m tall and 2 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and responds well to pruning, making it ideal for hedging or feature planting. For hedging, space plants 50 cm to 1.5 m apart, depending on how quickly you want the hedge to fill in. When grown as individual specimens, allow about 2.5 m between trees for healthy growth and easy fruit access.

Landscaping uses for Feijoa 'Opal Star'

Use Feijoa 'Opal Star' for home orchards, edible gardens, and productive feature planting. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth.
