“Maypole” is a unique variety of crab apple that grow as an upright, narrow column and bears fruit off that column. The result is a tree that grows to just 60 cm wide and can be topped at any height up to 3.5 m. The small fruit in autumn are glossy and dark red with flesh that is both crisp and excellent for making into crab apple jelly. It does require another variety planted nearby such as “Bolero” or “Polka” to produce fruit. The flowering display is spring is very aesthetic and lovely element this variety affords. Best results with this deciduous tree are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It will tolerate frost and cool climates. “Maypole” is commonly included in a mixed planting, maintained in a container, or planted in a series alongside a wall. It also suits being grown on a balcony or in a courtyard garden. This is a compact tree with great aesthetics and the added advantage of crab apples.
