How to grow Phormium 'Pepe' in NZ

Phormium 'Pepe' grows best in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to most soil types provided they are reasonably well drained. It tolerates wind, coastal conditions, frost, and dry periods once established. Water regularly during establishment to encourage strong root development and healthy foliage growth. Adding compost to the soil before planting can improve soil structure and moisture retention. Select a position where the compact form and fine foliage can be fully appreciated.

Phormium 'Pepe' care tips

Phormium 'Pepe' is extremely easy to maintain and requires very little ongoing care. Remove damaged or ageing leaves as required to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. Apply a balanced garden fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage and strong growth. Water during prolonged dry periods, particularly while young plants establish. Mature plants are highly resilient and generally require little more than occasional grooming to maintain their attractive appearance.

Phormium 'Pepe' size, spacing, and growth rate

Phormium 'Pepe' typically grows to around 40 to 60 cm tall and up to 60 cm wide, forming a compact mound of fine arching foliage. It has a moderate growth rate and develops into an attractive feature plant over several seasons. For borders, edging, or mass planting, space plants approximately 50 cm to 70 cm apart to allow for mature growth and healthy airflow. Proper spacing ensures a dense yet tidy planting effect.

Landscaping uses for Phormium 'Pepe'

Phormium 'Pepe' is perfect for adding texture, structure, and movement to garden spaces. It works beautifully in modern gardens, rockeries, coastal landscapes, mixed borders, container plantings, and commercial landscapes. The fine foliage contrasts well with broader leafed shrubs and flowering perennials. Its compact size makes it particularly useful for smaller gardens, edging pathways, or creating repetition and rhythm within larger planting designs.
