Libertia 'Grasshopper' (Dwarf Libertia)

Libertia 'Grasshopper' is a dwarf variety of Libertia grown for its showy flowers and small stature. Lovely, white flowers are held in clusters above the foliage throughout spring, resulting in orange-red berries in autumn. It grows as a tidy clump of green, sword-like leaves, to about 10-15 cm tall and the same wide. Libertia 'Grasshopper' is commonly mass planted, added to a mixed planting, planted around the base of a larger tree, included in cottage or “white” gardens, or planted anywhere structure and texture are desired in a garden.

Growing Libertia 'Grasshopper' Successfully in NZ

Libertia 'Grasshopper' is a hardy New Zealand native well-suited to a range of garden conditions. It prefers well-drained soil and grows best in full sun to partial shade, where its vibrant, green, and bronze-toned foliage develops optimally. This clump-forming perennial is drought-tolerant once established and handles wind and coastal conditions well. Plant in groups for mass effect or use as a feature in borders or rock gardens. Mulch annually and divide clumps every few years to maintain plant health and form.

Libertia 'Grasshopper' Care Tips

Libertia 'Grasshopper' is a low-maintenance and easy-to-care-for plant. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions and requires minimal watering. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and benefits from an annual application of slow-release fertiliser in spring. Remove spent flower stalks and old foliage to keep the plant tidy.

Plant Size and Spacing

Libertia 'Grasshopper' typically grows to around 10-15 cm tall and the same width. For mass planting or garden borders, space plants approximately 10 cm apart to allow for clump expansion while maintaining good coverage.
