Dianella nigra Margaret Pringle is a lovely NZ native Flax Lily that is grown for both its foliage and flowers. In spring it bears spikes carrying delicate, blue flowers which are followed by small, blue berries in summer. These are held neatly above the variegated, strap-like leaves which are coloured yellow and green. It typically grows to 50 cm tall and the same wide and has storage roots that enable it to survive a wide range of environmental conditions. It grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Dianella nigra Margaret Pringle is hardy to frost, coastal environments, dry periods, and cold climates. This easy to grow plant is commonly included in a mixed planting or border, used in cottage gardens, or mass planted either on a bank or as a groundcover.
