Growing Dianella 'King Alfred' in New Zealand is rewarding and simple. It prefers sunny to partly shaded positions in well drained soils. This variety is tolerant of frost and dry periods once established, making it reliable in most regions. Planting with compost or organic matter helps establish strong roots and healthy growth. Regular watering in the first few months after planting is recommended, but once settled, it becomes a low maintenance and resilient plant for a variety of garden settings.

Dianella 'King Alfred' care tips

Caring for Dianella 'King Alfred' is straightforward and ensures lasting garden performance. Trim back old or damaged foliage in late winter to encourage fresh spring growth. An annual feed with a slow release fertiliser supports vibrant foliage and abundant flowers. Although drought tolerant, the plant benefits from deep watering during extended dry spells. Mulching around the base helps conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the plant healthy and looking its best all year round.

Dianella 'King Alfred' size, spacing, and growth rate

Dianella 'King Alfred' is a medium sized Dianella variety, forming clumps that grow about 60 to 80 cm tall and 50 to 60 cm wide. For mass planting, allow 50 to 70 cm spacing between plants to create full coverage. Its growth rate is moderate to fast, particularly when provided with good soil and adequate water. The tidy, upright form ensures it delivers consistent structure, making it a reliable and long lasting addition to gardens and landscapes.
