Growing Dianella caerulea successfully in NZ

Dianella caerulea, also known as Blue Flax Lily, grows well in most parts of New Zealand. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers free-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during establishment, then only during extended dry spells. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. This hardy perennial tolerates coastal conditions, light frosts, and periods of dryness. Ideal for mass planting, borders, or underplanting, Dianella caerulea is a tough, low-maintenance landscaping choice.

Dianella caerulea care tips

Plant Dianella caerulea in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots, then reduce frequency as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Apply mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking tidy. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. This hardy plant requires minimal maintenance and is excellent for borders, mass planting, or ground cover.

Plant Size and Spacing

Dianella caerulea typically grows 60 to 90 cm tall and 40 to 60 cm wide, forming clumps of strappy, upright foliage. For best results in mass plantings or borders, space plants about 50 to 60 cm apart. This allows room for natural spread while ensuring good coverage and airflow, helping maintain healthy growth and a tidy appearance.
