How to grow Dianella brevicaulis in NZ

Dianella brevicaulis grows best in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Apply a balanced slow release fertiliser each spring to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth.

Dianella brevicaulis care tips

Remove old or damaged leaves as required to maintain a tidy appearance. Divide mature clumps every few years if they become overcrowded. Although drought tolerant once established, occasional watering during prolonged dry weather helps maintain lush foliage.

Dianella brevicaulis size, spacing, and growth rate

Dianella brevicaulis typically grows 30 to 50 centimetres tall and 40 to 60 centimetres wide. Space plants around 40 to 50 centimetres apart for borders or mass planting. Growth is moderate, with plants gradually forming dense, attractive clumps.

Landscaping uses for Dianella brevicaulis

Dianella brevicaulis is ideal for borders, mass planting, coastal gardens, native style gardens, containers, and low maintenance landscapes. Its compact habit and fine foliage provide year round structure and contrast beautifully with flowering perennials and ornamental grasses.
