How to grow the Astelia Rebel plant?

Astelia ‘Rebel’ is a cultivar of Astelia nervosa, admired for its rich bronze-red to deep burgundy foliage, which adds dramatic colour and texture to gardens. To grow it successfully, choose a position in full sun to partial shade—brighter light enhances its foliage colour. Plant it in well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter, as it does not tolerate waterlogging. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency as the plant becomes more drought-tolerant. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. In spring, apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage lush growth. Remove any dead or damaged leaves to maintain its tidy appearance. Astelia ‘Rebel’ is frost-hardy and copes well with wind, making it suitable for exposed areas. It performs well in borders, mass plantings, or containers, and its striking foliage provides year-round interest in both native and contemporary landscapes.

Astelia Rebel care

Astelia ‘Rebel’ is a hardy, evergreen ornamental valued for its dramatic bronze to deep burgundy foliage. It thrives in full sun to part shade, with the best colour developing in sunnier positions. Plant it in free-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid poorly drained or heavy soils, as these can cause root rot. Once established, ‘Rebel’ is reasonably drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during extended dry periods. Apply a layer of mulch to conserve soil moisture and reduce weed growth. Feed annually in spring with a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser to support vibrant foliage and healthy growth. Trim away any damaged or spent leaves to keep the plant tidy and attractive. Astelia ‘Rebel’ is frost-hardy and wind-tolerant, making it suitable for coastal, exposed, or urban gardens. Its striking colour and form make it ideal for mass planting, borders, or as a feature in pots.
