How to grow Astelia grandis plants?

Astelia grandis is a striking, large-leaved New Zealand native that thrives in moist, shaded environments. To grow this plant successfully, choose a spot with dappled or full shade, as it naturally occurs in forest understorey. The soil should be rich in organic matter, free-draining but moisture-retentive—mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Astelia grandis prefers consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, but it dislikes waterlogged conditions. When planting, space them well apart as the foliage can spread up to 1 metre. It tolerates light frosts, though young plants may need protection in colder areas. Fertilise in spring with a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser to encourage strong growth. Remove any damaged or dead foliage to keep the plant tidy. Astelia grandis adds a lush, tropical touch to shaded gardens and works well around water features or as an underplanting for trees.

Astelia grandis care

Astelia grandis, also known as Swamp Astelia, is a striking New Zealand native valued for its bold, broad foliage and ability to thrive in moist, shaded environments. To care for this plant, choose a semi-shaded to fully shaded position with rich, free-draining soil that retains some moisture. It prefers consistent moisture—especially in summer—but avoid waterlogged conditions. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy foliage growth. Remove any dead or damaged leaves to maintain its tidy appearance. While moderately frost-hardy, young plants may benefit from shelter during cold snaps. Astelia grandis makes an excellent statement plant in damp, woodland-style gardens or near ponds and shaded borders. It generally resists pests and diseases when grown in suitable conditions.
