Phormium cookianum ‘Surfer’ is a smaller variety of Flax that features sword-like leaves coloured olive-green and bronze. The foliage is complemented with clusters of yellow flowers in summer which are borne off long stems. This variety typically grows to 80 cm tall and the same wide with a tidy and compact habit. It grows best and produces the most intense leaf colourings when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate frost, coastal conditions, wind, poor soils, moderate shade, and cool climates. Phormium ‘Surfer’ is a versatile variety of Flax that makes a fantastic addition to mixed plantings, borders, or coastal gardens, and is commonly planted around water features, pool and barbecue areas, or grown in a container. It is also well suited for mass planting on a bank and in these situations provides an impressive display.
