Libertia ‘Taupo Sunset’ is a popular variety of the commonly known, NZ Iris, due to its colourful foliage and small, white flowers. The foliage is dense and consists of long, sword like leaves which have stripes of green, yellow, orange and red. As winter sets in the leaves develop bronze tones. Complementing the foliage are white, star like flowers which are borne above the foliage in spring. The flowers result in orange-red berries in autumn which are carried for two to three months. This NZ Iris typically grows to 50 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, frost, cool climates, and a wide range of soil conditions, barring extreme wet and dry. Libertia ‘Taupo Sunset’ is commonly mass planted, added to a mixed planting, planted around the base of a large tree, or included anywhere structure and texture are desired.
