Libertia grandiflora, commonly known as the NZ Iris or Mikoikoi, is a NZ native is grown for its beautiful flowers and lush foliage. Stems rise the foliage in spring to bear clusters of showy, white flowers in spring. The strap-like, dark green leaves provide an impressive contrast to the flowers. The flowers result in attractive, red-black seed capsules in summer. It typically grows to 60 cm tall and 75 cm wide and will colonise a larger area over time with its spreading roots. Best performance with this plant is achieved when it is positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Mikoikoi is tolerant of coastal conditions, cool climates, moderate frost, and a range of soil conditions, barring extreme wet and dry. The NZ Iris is commonly mass planted either on a bank or as a groundcover, added to a mixed planting, used in borders, planted around the base of trees, or added to cottage or “white” gardens. Libertia grandiflora is popular with landscapers coming up with premium designs for NZ gardens due to its great aesthetics and versatility.
