“Red Star” is a variety of the commonly known, Cabbage Tree, and is renowned for its slender, deep red foliage. The gently arching leaves are borne as a crown atop a short trunk. It will reach 3 m tall and 1.5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It can be grown in partial shade conditions but colouring will be less intense. It is also tolerant of moderate frost, cool climates, and coastal environments but should be protected while it is establishing. “Red Star” is perfect for adding height to plantings in narrow or confined spaces, growing in a container, including in tropical plantings, or using as a colourful accent in a mixed planting. This is a very popular plant owing to its striking colour and ease to grow.
