“Rebel” is a variety of Astelia selected for its impressive, red-brown foliage. The long and slender leaves are held somewhat stiffly and densely as it grows to 1 m tall and the same wide. Best results with this herbaceous perennial are achieved when it is planted in full sun on well-drained site. It will grow well in partial shade but leaf colouring will be less intense. It also tolerates extended dry periods, wind, and frost, but it is intolerant of wet soils. “Rebel” is an ideal plant for coastal planting, mass planting either as a groundcover or on a bank, including in borders or mixed plantings, or for adding texture and interest to a garden. A mass planting is the best way to showcase this Astelia and makes for a striking display.
