Pellaea rotundifolia, commonly known as the Button fern, is a NZ native that is often grown as a pot planted. It features dark green, leathery leaves, on fronds up to 20 cm long and typically grows to only 20 cm tall. It prefers to grow in partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site that does not dry out. It will tolerate light frost once established, heavy shade, and coastal environments. Pellaea rotundifolia is a hardy fern that makes for an attractive indoor plant but is also commonly planted outdoors. In the garden it can be used to underplant trees and shrubs, added to mixed plantings, or mass planted for a stunning display.
