Matteuccia struthiopteris, commonly known as the Ostrich Fern, is a popular and showy fern due to its impressive form and foliage. It produces erect, bright green fronds with a feathery appearance which results in a lovely plume of foliage. It typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide but will spread via storage roots to colonise a larger area. This fern grows best in partial shade on a moist soil that does not dry out though it is tolerant of wet soils and heavy shade. Matteuccia struthiopteris is commonly mass planted in woodland areas, around streams or ponds, added to mixed plantings, or included in wetter areas of the garden.
