Cyathea tomentosissima, commonly known as the Highland Lace Fern, produces masses of soft and delicate looking fronds which spread horizontally to about 1 m from a central crown. These are held on an upright stem which may reach 1.5 m tall. Plants grow best in partial shade to full shade conditions on a well-drained soil that does not dry out. Cyathea tomentosissima is commonly used to provide a sub-tropical feel to the garden, included in mixed plantings, planted around pool or barbecue areas, or maintained in a container. A mass planting produces a dramatic display.
