Plant Size And Growth – Grows 80cm Tall x 1.5m Wide

This ground fern typically grows up to 80 cm tall with fronds spreading 1.5 metres wide. It forms dense colonies over time, making it excellent for erosion control and weed suppression. The reddish colouring of new growth adds seasonal interest, and its fibrous root system helps stabilise soil in sloped or disturbed areas.

Where To Grow Blechnum novae-zelandiae In NZ

Best planted in moist, shady areas with rich, well-drained soil. This fern tolerates cold and wet conditions and is ideal for revegetation, stream banks, and native woodland gardens. It also performs well in filtered light beneath tree canopies, where it adds texture and ground coverage without competing heavily with trees or shrubs.

Why Blechnum novae-zelandiae Is Great For NZ Landscapes

Its vigorous, spreading nature and native provenance make it perfect for large-scale native projects, forest gardens, and damp gullies where coverage and resilience are key. It works well alongside other NZ natives such as Carex, Astelia, and Pittosporum, helping to establish a healthy, low-maintenance ecosystem in shaded or semi-shaded areas.
