Blechnum novae-zelandiae (Capense) Details
Commonly known as Kiokio, this NZ native fern is often found growing abundantly on clay banks along roadsides and rivers. It features long and cascading fronds that may reach 2 m long and 50 cm wide. Young fronds often have red tones when grown in a sunny position, which age to light green, and darken further as they mature, developing a crinkled appearance at the same time. This fern grows best in partial shade on a sheltered site that does not dry out. It is commonly used in situations where its long fronds can be appreciated such as in large containers or at the top of walls. It also makes for a lovely groundcover in shaded areas due to its ability to colonise an area reasonably quickly, or included in woodland gardens.
