Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio)

Mountain kiokio, Mountain blechnum

Blechnum montanum, commonly known as Mountain Kiokio, is a NZ native fern that is often found growing abundantly in cold and wet alpine conditions. It features cascading fronds that typically reach 30 cm in length. Young fronds frequently have pink-red tones which age to light green, and darken further as they mature. Blechnum montanum is commonly used as a groundcover in shaded areas due to its ability to colonise an area reasonably quickly, or is included in woodland gardens.

How to grow Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio) in NZ

Growing Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio) in New Zealand is straightforward when given the right conditions. It thrives in shaded to partly shaded areas with moist, well drained soils. Adding organic matter at planting helps encourage healthy root development and lush foliage. Consistent watering is important while establishing, after which the plant becomes relatively low maintenance. Mountain Kiokio is naturally suited to cooler, damp environments, making it ideal for forest gardens and shaded borders.

Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio) care tips

Caring for Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio) is simple and helps maintain its lush appearance. Remove older or damaged fronds to keep the plant tidy and encourage new growth. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feeding with an organic fertiliser in spring supports vigorous growth. Although tolerant of cool and damp conditions, it will benefit from regular watering during dry spells to ensure the fronds remain fresh and vibrant.

Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio) size, spacing, and growth rate

Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio) typically grows to about 60 to 90 cm tall and 60 cm wide, forming a tidy clump of upright fronds. For mass planting, space plants 50 to 70 cm apart to create dense coverage. Its growth rate is moderate, with plants establishing steadily under good care. The structured form and lush green foliage make it a reliable feature plant for shaded garden areas.

Landscaping uses for Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio)

Blechnum montanum (Mountain Kiokio) is widely used in landscaping to create lush, naturalistic plantings. It is perfect for shaded borders, forest gardens, or alongside streams where its preference for damp soils is met. The upright fronds add vertical texture and contrast beautifully with ground covers and other ferns. Mountain Kiokio also performs well in mixed native plantings, where it enhances biodiversity and contributes to a distinctly New Zealand aesthetic.
