Blechnum discolor is a NZ native fern that produces a distinctive crown of radiating fronds. The showy fronds emerge pale green and darken as they mature. Old fronds are eventually shed which results in a short trunk, about 30 cm tall. The fronds themselves may reach 40-60 cm long. This fern thrives in shaded, sheltered environments that are constantly damp but also free draining. It makes for an attractive groundcover beneath trees and is a fantastic addition to woodland and native plantings.
