How to grow Blechnum brasiliense in NZ

Plant in a sheltered, partially shaded position in rich, free-draining soil. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. This fern prefers warm, frost-free areas, though light frost can be tolerated if protected. In cooler climates, grow in containers and move to a sheltered spot in winter. Regular watering and mulching help maintain ideal conditions for lush growth.

Blechnum brasiliense care tips

Remove old or damaged fronds at the base to encourage healthy new growth. Apply a slow-release fertiliser for ferns in spring and midsummer to maintain vigour. Protect from harsh winds and hot afternoon sun, which can scorch fronds. In colder areas, apply frost cloth during winter to protect emerging growth.

Blechnum brasiliense size, spacing, and growth rate

Grows 1–1.5 m tall with a spread of 1–1.2 m. Space 80–100 cm apart when mass planting. Has a moderate growth rate, forming a short trunk with age.
