How to grow Asplenium australasicum (Birds Nest Fern) in NZ

Asplenium australasicum grows best in a warm, sheltered spot with filtered light or full shade. It prefers rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture but doesn’t stay soggy. Choose a humid environment—ideal for indoor spaces, bathrooms, or tropical-style gardens. Water regularly during dry spells and keep the centre of the fern (the “nest”) free from water build-up to prevent rot. It can also be grown in pots with a free-draining mix and regular misting to boost humidity.

Asplenium australasicum care tips

Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained, and avoid letting water sit in the centre of the fern to prevent rot. Position the plant in a warm, sheltered location with bright, indirect light or full shade. Indoors, increase humidity by misting regularly or placing the pot on a humidity tray. Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser during spring and summer. Remove damaged fronds as needed, and avoid excessive handling of the fronds, which can easily be bruised.
