How to grow Adiantum aleuticum (Five-Finger Fern) in NZ

Adiantum aleuticum (Five Finger Fern) grows best in part shade to full shade and prefers cool, moist, well drained soil rich in organic matter. Choose a sheltered site out of strong sun, wind, and sudden temperature changes. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment and maintain humidity in indoor settings. This fern thrives in woodland gardens, shaded patios, and bathroom environments where conditions remain consistently damp.

Adiantum aleuticum (Five-Finger Fern) care tips

Adiantum aleuticum (Five Finger Fern) is easy to care for when given moisture, shade, and gentle conditions. Water regularly to keep the soil lightly damp, avoiding both dryness and waterlogging. Mist the fronds in dry or heated indoor spaces. Remove older fronds to encourage fresh growth. A light application of liquid fertiliser during spring and summer supports healthy new foliage. Protect from harsh sun and draughts for best results.

Adiantum aleuticum (Five-Finger Fern) size spacing and growth rate

Adiantum aleuticum (Five Finger Fern) typically grows thirty to sixty centimetres tall and around thirty to fifty centimetres wide. When planting in groups, space plants thirty to forty centimetres apart. Growth is moderate, forming upright clumps with distinctive fan shaped fronds. Once established, it becomes a long lived and graceful fern that adds soft structure and fine texture to shaded garden or indoor settings.

Landscaping uses for Adiantum aleuticum (Five-Finger Fern)

Adiantum aleuticum (Five Finger Fern) is ideal for shaded patios, indoor planters, terrariums, and woodland gardens. Its delicate fronds pair beautifully with broad leaved shade plants such as hosta, asplenium, and peace lily. Use it to soften hard edges, bring elegance to pots, or create layered fern combinations.
