Thuja 'Smaragd'

Green Cedar, Emerald Cedar, Northern White Cedar, Thuja occidentalis

Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’, commonly known as the Green, Emerald, or Northern White Cedar, grows with a narrow, dense, and columnar habit. The foliage is rich green, sometimes tinged bronze in winter, and produced with a somewhat layered effect to give the plant an interesting texture. It typically grows to 7 m tall and 2.5 m wide in full sun. Thuja ‘Smaragd’ is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown for shelter or screening, used for hedging, or planted to line an entranceway or avenue. It is great for providing an architectural element and suits being planted against a large, bland wall.

Thuja 'Smaragd' Details

Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’, commonly known as the Green, Emerald, or Northern White Cedar, is an interesting conifer grown for both its form and foliage. It grows with a narrow, dense, and columnar habit. The foliage is rich green, sometimes tinged bronze in winter, and produced with a somewhat layered effect to give the plant an interesting texture. The leaves themselves are tiny and aromatic. It typically grows to 7 m tall and 2.5 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this small tree are achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a semi-sheltered, well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, coastal environments, and short periods of dry though will benefit from protection while it is establishing. Thuja ‘Smaragd’ is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown for shelter or screening, used for hedging, or planted to line an entranceway or avenue. It is great for providing an architectural element and suits being planted against a large, bland wall.
