How to grow Thuja plicata in NZ

Thuja plicata, commonly known as Western Red Cedar, grows best in full sun to partial shade and moist, well drained soil. It is well suited to New Zealand’s cooler and wetter regions, and thrives in both sheltered and exposed sites. This fast growing evergreen is ideal for large hedges, screens, or timber plantations. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, especially in dry conditions. Once established, it is tolerant of wind, cold, and short dry spells. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring, and mulch around the base to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Prune to shape or maintain hedge height as required.

Western Red Cedar care tips

Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is easy to care for and well-suited to New Zealand conditions. Water regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots, especially in dry weather. Once established, it tolerates wind, cold, and light drought. Plant in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring. Light pruning can help maintain the shape or control the height of a hedge or screen. Avoid planting in areas with poor drainage or waterlogging.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) typically grows to 15–30 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide in ideal conditions, though it can be kept smaller with regular trimming. It has a fast growth rate, often adding 50–80 cm of height per year when young. For hedging or shelterbelts, space plants 1–1.5 metres apart. In timber or specimen plantings, allow at least 4–5 metres between trees to accommodate their mature size and natural shape.
