Thuja 'Smaragd' (Green Cedar, Green Arborvitae)

5 from 2 customers

Green Cedar, Emerald Cedar, Green Arborvitae

Thuja 'Smaragd', commonly known as the Green or Emerald Cedar, grows with a narrow, dense, and columnar habit. The foliage is rich green, sometimes tinged bronze in winter, and produced with a somewhat layered effect to give the plant an interesting texture. It typically grows to 7 m in height and 2.5 m in width in full sun. Thuja 'Smaragd' is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, grown for shelter or screening, used for hedging, or planted to line an entranceway or avenue. It is excellent for providing an architectural element and suits being planted against a large, bland wall.

How to grow Thuja 'Smaragd' (Green Arborvitae) in NZ

Thuja 'Smaragd' grows best in full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil. It is well suited to most parts of New Zealand and is commonly used for formal hedging or as a vertical accent. Choose a sunny, sheltered position for best results. Water regularly during the first year to establish a deep root system, especially during dry spells. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring, and prune lightly to shape if needed. However, this variety naturally maintains a dense, narrow form without requiring heavy trimming.

Thuja 'Smaragd' care tips

Thuja 'Smaragd' is easy to care for and naturally forms a dense, upright cone shape with minimal pruning. Water regularly during its first year to help establish a deep, healthy root system, then only during extended dry periods. It prefers full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage rich green foliage. Light trimming can be used to maintain a formal shape, but heavy pruning is generally not necessary. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Thuja 'Smaragd' typically grows to 3–4 metres tall and 60–90 cm wide, forming a narrow, conical shape. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, adding around 20–30 cm of height per year under ideal conditions. For hedging, space plants 60–80 cm apart to create a dense screen. As a specimen or accent plant, allow at least 1 metre of space around each plant to showcase its elegant form.
