Thuja occidentalis (White Cedar)

Thuja occidentalis, commonly known as White Cedar or Eastern Arborvitae, is a hardy, evergreen conifer valued for its dense, pyramidal form and soft, scale-like foliage. It grows 5–10 metres tall and is suitable for hedging, screening, or specimen planting in New Zealand gardens. Thriving in full sun to light shade and well-drained soil, it tolerates cold, wind, and frost. This low-maintenance tree responds well to trimming and provides year-round structure, privacy, and greenery in the landscape.

How to grow Thuja occidentalis in NZ

Thuja occidentalis grows well in full sun to light shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is well-suited to a range of New Zealand conditions and is often used for hedging, shelter, or as a specimen tree. Plant in a sunny, sheltered location and water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Minimal pruning is needed, as it naturally forms a dense, upright shape.

Thuja occidentalis care tips

Thuja occidentalis is easy to care for and naturally forms a dense, upright shape with little pruning. Water regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots, especially during dry periods. Once established, it copes well with frosts and moderate drought. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy, green growth. Light trimming can be done to maintain shape or create a formal hedge. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Thuja occidentalis typically grows to 5–10 metres tall and 2–3 metres wide, forming a dense, pyramidal shape. It has a moderate growth rate, generally adding 20–40 cm of height per year under ideal conditions. For hedging or screening, space plants 1–1.5 metres apart to form a full, dense barrier. When used as a specimen or in mixed plantings, allow at least 2 metres of space to accommodate its mature spread and natural form.
