Picea smithiana (Himalayan Spruce)

Picea smithiana, commonly known as Himalayan Spruce, is a majestic evergreen conifer with long, slender needles and graceful, drooping branch tips. Native to the Himalayan region, it grows into a tall, stately tree that brings elegance and structure to large gardens and landscapes. Hardy and long-lived, it tolerates frost and a range of soil types. Himalayan Spruce is perfect for creating a dramatic focal point or as part of a conifer collection in New Zealand gardens.

How to grow Picea smithiana in NZ

Plant Himalayan Spruce in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil enriched with compost. Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, then only in extended dry periods. This variety is frost-hardy and tolerates exposed sites, though it will grow best in sheltered conditions. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is rarely needed, but remove damaged branches in late winter.

Picea smithiana care tips

Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for evergreens to maintain strong growth and deep green colour. Keep the base free from weeds and avoid waterlogging. This spruce is generally pest- and disease-resistant in NZ conditions, making it an easy-care choice for large gardens.

Picea smithiana size, spacing, and growth rate

Himalayan Spruce grows slowly to moderately, reaching 30–40 m tall and 6–8 m wide over many decades. It is best suited to large properties where it can develop its full, graceful form. Space at least 5 m from other large trees or structures.
