How to grow Picea pungens in NZ

Plant Blue Spruce in full sun for the best needle colour. It thrives in well-drained soil and benefits from compost enrichment at planting. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, then only in extended dry periods. This variety is frost-hardy and tolerates exposed conditions. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Minimal pruning is required, except to remove damaged or crossing branches in late winter.

Picea pungens care tips

Feed annually in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for evergreens to maintain vibrant colour and strong growth. Keep the root zone clear of weeds and avoid waterlogging. Blue Spruce is generally pest- and disease-resistant in NZ gardens, making it easy to grow.

Picea pungens size, spacing, and growth rate

Blue Spruce grows slowly to moderately, reaching 15–25 m tall and 4–6 m wide at maturity. Space 3–4 m apart for shelter planting or allow room for its full spread when used as a specimen.
