How to grow Picea orientalis in NZ

Plant Oriental Spruce in full sun to light shade in fertile, well-drained soil. It adapts to a range of soil types but benefits from compost enrichment at planting. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, then only in extended dry periods. This variety is frost-hardy and tolerates exposed sites. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is rarely needed but can be done in late winter to remove damaged growth.

Picea orientalis care tips

Feed annually in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for evergreens to maintain healthy growth and colour. Keep the root zone clear of weeds or grass, and avoid overwatering. Oriental Spruce is generally pest- and disease-resistant in NZ gardens, making it easy to care for.

Picea orientalis size, spacing, and growth rate

This spruce grows slowly to about 20–25 m tall and 4–6 m wide at maturity. Space at least 3 m apart for shelter or screening, or plant as a single specimen for maximum impact.
