How to grow Picea omorica in NZ

Plant Serbian Spruce in full sun to partial shade in fertile, free-draining soil. It adapts to different soil types but prefers slightly acidic conditions enriched with compost. Water regularly during the first year to help establishment, then only during extended dry spells. This variety is frost-hardy and tolerates exposed sites. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is rarely needed, but light shaping can be done in late winter if required.

Picea omorica care tips

Feed annually in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for evergreens to promote strong, healthy growth. Keep the base free from weeds and avoid waterlogging. Serbian Spruce is generally pest- and disease-resistant in New Zealand conditions, making it easy to maintain.

Picea omorica size, spacing, and growth rate

Serbian Spruce grows slowly to moderately, reaching around 10–15 m tall and 2–4 m wide over many years. Space at least 2 m apart for shelter planting, or give it room to stand alone as a specimen tree.
