Picea engelmannii (Engelmann Spruce)

Picea engelmannii, commonly known as Engelmann Spruce, is a hardy evergreen conifer native to North America’s mountain regions. It features dense, blue-green needles and a narrow, pyramidal form that adds year-round structure and colour to gardens. Well-suited to cold climates, it tolerates frost and poor soils. Engelmann Spruce is an excellent choice for shelter, screening, or as a specimen tree, bringing beauty and resilience to New Zealand gardens with minimal maintenance.

How to grow Picea engelmannii in NZ

Plant Engelmann Spruce in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It will adapt to a range of soil types but prefers slightly acidic conditions enriched with compost. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, then only in extended dry periods. This variety is frost-hardy and performs well in exposed, high-country conditions. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Minimal pruning is needed, except to remove damaged growth in late winter.

Picea engelmannii care tips

Feed annually in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for evergreens to maintain strong growth and vibrant needle colour. Keep the base weed-free and avoid waterlogging. Engelmann Spruce is generally pest- and disease-resistant in NZ, making it a reliable and low-care choice.

Picea engelmannii size, spacing, and growth rate

Engelmann Spruce grows slowly to moderately, reaching 20–30 m tall and 3–5 m wide at maturity. Space at least 3 m apart for shelter planting or allow room for its full form when used as a specimen.
