Picea 'Baby Blue' (Baby Blue Spruce)

Picea ‘Baby Blue’, commonly called Baby Blue Spruce, is a compact, slow-growing conifer prized for its striking silver-blue needles and dense, symmetrical shape. Smaller than the traditional blue spruce, it is perfect for feature planting in smaller gardens, rockeries, or formal landscapes. Hardy and low maintenance, it tolerates frost and poor soils, offering year-round colour and structure. Baby Blue Spruce is an excellent choice for adding elegance and contrast to New Zealand gardens.

How to grow Picea ‘Baby Blue’ in NZ

Plant Baby Blue Spruce in full sun for the best needle colour. It thrives in free-draining soil and benefits from compost enrichment at planting. Water regularly during its first year to establish roots, then only during extended dry periods. This variety is frost-hardy and withstands exposed conditions. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Minimal pruning is needed, but remove any damaged growth in late winter.

Picea ‘Baby Blue’ care tips

Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for evergreens to maintain vibrant foliage. Avoid waterlogged soils, as this can cause root issues. Keep the base clear of competing weeds or grass. Baby Blue Spruce is generally pest- and disease-free in NZ conditions.

Picea ‘Baby Blue’ size, spacing, and growth rate

This spruce grows slowly to around 3–5 m tall and 2–3 m wide, making it ideal for smaller gardens. Space 2 m apart when planting in groups to allow for full form development.
