How to grow Picea abies ‘Pyramidalis’ in NZ

Plant Picea abies ‘Pyramidalis’ in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil. It adapts to a range of soil types but benefits from soil enriched with compost at planting. Water regularly during the first year to establish roots, then only in extended dry periods. This variety is frost-hardy and tolerates exposed sites. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Minimal pruning is needed, but remove any damaged or wayward growth in late winter.

Picea abies ‘Pyramidalis’ care tips

Feed annually in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for evergreens to maintain lush, green foliage. Keep the root zone free from competing weeds or grass. Avoid overwatering, as spruce prefer well-drained soil. This variety is generally pest- and disease-resistant in NZ gardens.

Picea abies ‘Pyramidalis’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Dwarf Spruce grows slowly to about 3–5 m tall and 1–2 m wide over many years. Space at least 1.5 m apart when planting to allow for its mature spread. The slow growth rate makes it ideal for smaller gardens and low-maintenance landscapes.
