How to grow Picea abies (Norway Spruce) in NZ

Picea abies, commonly known as the Norway Spruce, thrives in New Zealand’s cooler regions and is valued for its tall, pyramidal shape and dense, dark-green foliage. Plant in a sunny position with well-drained, fertile soil for best results. Water regularly during the first two years to help establish strong roots, then only during extended dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. Mulching around the base helps conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Norway Spruce prefers cooler summers and is best suited to southern or elevated areas. Minimal pruning is required—simply remove dead or damaged branches as needed

Norway Spruce tree care tips

The Norway Spruce tree (Picea abies) grows best in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil and regular watering during establishment. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser, mulch to retain moisture, and prune only to remove damaged branches. It thrives in cooler regions and needs minimal maintenance once established.

Does the Norway Spruce makes a good Christmas tree?

Yes, the Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is one of the most traditional and recognisable Christmas trees. Its classic triangular shape, rich green colour, and dense branching make it ideal for holding decorations. However, when cut, it can drop needles faster than some modern Christmas tree varieties, so keeping it well-watered and away from direct heat sources will help it stay fresh for longer. Potted Norway Spruce trees can also be brought indoors for the festive season and replanted outdoors afterwards.
