Commonly known as Japanese Cedar, this is a very large, evergreen tree that can reach 70 m tall with a 4 m diameter trunk. It carries needle-like, dark green foliage that has a distinctive “soft” appearance. The wood from this tree is extremely fragrant, insect resistant, of low density, and is often used for making staves, tubs, casks, and furniture. It tolerates a wide range of conditions including frost, cold environments, dry periods, and wind but will certainly grow best in a full sun position that is well-drained. This Japanese Cedar makes a fantastic specimen tree and is often used as a windbreak on a farm or lifestyle block with the added option of timber production.
