Cephalotaxus harringtonia Fastigiata, commonly known as the Japanese Plum Yew, is a slow growing conifer grown for its unique foliage. This evergreen produces dark green, needle like foliage which is arranged in a spiral on erect stems. New foliage is distinctively lighter in colour giving the plant a two-toned colouring for large parts of the year. It is typically grown as a shrub to 2.5 m and 1 m wide, performing best when grown in a full sun position on a well-drained site. It is a hardy plant that will tolerate frost, cool climates, dry periods, moderate shade, and a degree of wind. Cephalotaxus harringtonia Fastigiata is commonly grown in a container, added to a mixed planting, grown as an informal hedge, or grown as a specimen. This is one of the more aesthetic conifers, hence its popularity.
