How to grow Wisteria sinensis (Chinese Wisteria) in NZ

Wisteria sinensis (Chinese Wisteria) grows best in full sun to maximise flowering, though it will tolerate light shade. Plant into fertile free draining soil and provide a very strong support structure such as a pergola or heavy fence. It performs well across most NZ regions. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce once settled. Early training of shoots helps form a balanced framework.

Wisteria sinensis (Chinese Wisteria) care tips

Wisteria sinensis (Chinese Wisteria) requires regular pruning to control growth and encourage flowering. Prune immediately after flowering and again in late summer to shorten long shoots. Water during extended dry periods, particularly in the first few years. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser, avoiding high nitrogen products that encourage foliage rather than flowers.

Wisteria sinensis (Chinese Wisteria) size, spacing, and growth rate

Wisteria sinensis (Chinese Wisteria) typically grows to around 8 to 10 metres tall with support and can spread several metres wide. It has a vigorous growth rate once established. Space plants at least 5 metres apart when planting along structures to allow for airflow and canopy development. Its size makes it suitable for large gardens and open spaces.
