Blue Trumpet Vine, Bengal Clock Vine
Thunbergia grandiflora, commonly known as the Blue Trumpet Vine, is an evergreen climber grown for its impressive flowers. Showy, soft-blue flowers with a yellow centre are borne from late spring through until early autumn. It has twinning stems with arrow-shaped, mid green leaves. This climber will easily reach 2.5 m tall but is often contained to smaller sizes with trimming. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a sheltered, well-drained site. In temperate areas this plant should be treated as an annual as frosts will damage or even kill the plant. The Blue Trumpet Vine is commonly trained on a trellis, included in tropical gardens, or planted anywhere its magnificent flowers can be appreciated.

Kia ora, The best time to plant Thunbergia grandiflora in Auckland is in spring, once the weather has warmed up and the risk of cold nights has passed. You can definitely buy one now and keep it indoors in a warm, bright spot. Just make sure it gets plenty of light and isn’t exposed to cold drafts. Then, plant it outside in spring when temperatures are more stable. If you do keep it indoors for a while, try to gradually acclimatise it to outdoor conditions before planting.
