Growing Tecomanthe speciosa Successfully in NZ

To grow Tecomanthe speciosa successfully in New Zealand, choose a warm, sheltered location with well-drained soil and partial shade to full sun. This rare native climber thrives in humid conditions and benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods. It requires support such as a trellis, fence, or pergola to climb. Protect young plants from frost and cold winds. Mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. With the proper care, it rewards with lush growth and spectacular, tubular pink flowers.

Tecomanthe speciosa Care Tips

Tecomanthe speciosa is best cared for in a warm, sheltered spot with moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially when the plant is young. It prefers partial shade but will tolerate full sun if protected from harsh winds. Provide a strong support structure for climbing. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. Fertilise lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage flowering. Protect from frost, particularly in colder regions, as young plants are frost tender.

Plant Size and Spacing

Tecomanthe speciosa is a vigorous climber that can reach 5 to 8 metres tall or more when supported. It spreads 2 to 3 metres wide, depending on the structure it climbs. Space plants at least 1.5 to 2 metres apart if planting multiple vines, to allow room for growth and airflow. With the proper support and conditions, it will form a lush, flowering display over walls, fences, or pergolas.
