Supplejack, Kareao, Pirita
Ripogonum scandens, commonly known as supplejack or kareao, is a vigorous, woody vine native to New Zealand's forests. It climbs through the canopy or forms dense tangles on the forest floor when support is unavailable. Growing in lowland to montane forests, it produces greenish-yellow flowers in summer followed by bright red berries that attract birds. Supplejack thrives in moist, shaded conditions and is ideal for native revegetation. It also holds cultural significance, traditionally used by MÄori for weaving, food, and medicine.
